On arrivig home today I noticed there is a small amount of movement (up and down) within my handle bar assembly is this normal /

Your bars shouldn't move like that mate.
Sounds like the riser clamps are not tight enough.
An allen key should be all you need to tighten them up. Make sure you do them all, not just the one that is loosest.

One thing to think about though that just popped into my head. When BB went down on the tarmac a while back, how hard did the bars hit the road?
Just wondering if the billet clamps might have been stripped a little by the bars being forced through them or possibly the knurling on the bars being smoothed out.
It is something the dealership should have checked when BB went in for surgery, but knowing how bad most stealerships are at actually doing a job properly, especially when they know the customer is not a petrol head, I'd certainly have a look at getting them to replace either of the possibly damaged parts AT THEIR EXPENSE if simply tightening them up doesn't work. You CAN'T OVERTIGHTEN the allen bolts or you weaken the entire bond and can possibly strip the threads from either the bolts or the housing.

Ok..will see what tightening does..BB was repaired at carole nash workshop instead of the local stealership..they claim to hav efitted new bars but I'm not convinced.

Unless the bars were obviously bent mate, I guarantee they will have charged for new bars but will not have replaced them.
Carole Nash are good at insurance but I wouldn't trust an insurance broker to repair my ride, 2 or 4 wheels.
I bet they weren't any cheaper than the stealership doing the work either.

Did they replace the controls or just put a new lever on? (assuming the bars hit the ground at all)

If the bars hit hard enough to warrant replacing, then I guarantee that they would have had to change the entire lever assembly, with  clutch or throttle/brake as the housings are cast ally and crack like there's no tomorrow.
I think they are making up stories mate
