Time for a stupid question

 I need to ask a stupid question: Its been a while since I checked the oil on my heritage and now I find the dipstick won't come out, do I just pull with all my might or do i unscrew it? I have tried both to no avail..if you could advise I would be most grateful!

Not a stupid question mate, the O ring that seal the oil cap has just got dry and is sticking to the sides.
If it won't move using normal hand pressure, try getting a rag and soaking it in boiling water and drape it around the oil filler for a while.
That should slightly expand the cap and you should be able to remove it. Even though it is a push fit oil cap, try rotating it as if you were unscrewing it just to break the seal.

When you put it pacb, rub a little oil onto the O ring to prevent it sticking again

Cheers Ian..I have turned (unscrewed it)..it comes out slightly ...I will try the hotrag and give that a go!..also are there other resevoirs I need to check?..if so how do I do that?

No problem Rob
You should check everything that uses fluids i.e. brake reservoirs, clutch reservoir if you have hydraulic clutch, transmission.
Whilst you are digging around the bike, check your brake pads and adjust any play in the clutch (cable type), also check all bulbs and lights.
Other than getting your tools out, there is not a lot you can do on your bike, one last thing is check for wear and tension on the drive belt.
It should be tight with a little spring in it when you press down on it. to check for wear just run your finger along the underside of the belt feeling for frayed edges, missing/damaged teeth.

Did it come out far enough to squirt a little oil around to lubricate the o-ring. if so work it back and forth then try to remove.

I would like to buy a new dipstick for my heritage...on getting the old one out it looked pretty cruddy plus I made a mistake of using a screwdriver to apply some leverage and it chewed the plastic seal around the underside of the knob...can you advise which dipstick to order?
